Boy Scout Troop 159 is sponsored by Our Lady Queen of Peace Church in Hewitt, NJ.
Boy Scouting is a year-round program for boys ages 11-17. Through the Boy Scout program, The Boy Scouts of America is one of the nation's largest and most prominent values-based youth development organizations. The BSA provides a program for young people that builds character, trains them in the responsibilities of participating citizenship, and develops personal fitness.
Boy Scout Troop 159 meets between the months of September and June, every Wednesday from 7:30 to 9 PM in the Our Lady Queen of Peace gymnasium (1911 Union Valley Road, Hewitt, NJ 07421). Our program also consists of monthly camping trips and annual summer camp attendance in July.
If you're interested in seeing what Scouting and Teamwork is all about, please contact Scoutmaster Tim Kopko (scoutmaster@OLQPTroopandPack159.org)
Those boys that worked on the Forestry Merit Badge will also have the opportunity to work towards completing requirements 1 (make a collection of 15 species of trees/shrubs), 5a (visit a public forest area with its manager) and 7 (assist in a recreation area improvement).
About Round Valley Recreation Area: The brisk blue waters of Round Valley Reservoir attract swimmers, boaters, fishermen, picnickers and campers to its scenic shore. The Round Valley Reservoir swimming area was created by the construction of an earth dam across a narrow waterway on the west side of the reservoir, separating it from the main part of the reservoir. The reservoir covers over 2,000 acres and is approximately 180 feet deep, the deepest lake in New Jersey. It has a water capacity of 55 billion gallons. The reservoir is stocked with lake trout.
Round Valley is one of the few parks that offers wilderness camping. The campsites on the eastern side of the reservoir are accessible only by hiking or boating. See the campground map here: Round Valley Map. We are staying at sites 3 and 5.
All, for those who want to complete the orienteering merit badge, here is the last requirement:
8. Set up a cross country course at least 2000 meters long with at least 5 control markers (to see how long it takes to get all points) OR set up a course with at least 12 control points and a time limit of 60 minutes with values for each point (to see how many points one can get in 60 min)
9. Act as an official while someone runs the course designed in number 8.
An example of what you need to set up (the map and score sheet, which can be used for either method in # 8) can be found here: Orienteering Scoring O Race.
The map and scoresheet can be drawn by hand but need to be legible and accurate to scale so I can review it. You can do this anytime this summer on your own. Please include who ran the course and their time/score. The pictures of participant map and scoring sheet are below and will be posted as well.
